Cajun Two Step Seasoning Recipe (1)

This Cajun Two Step Seasoning recipe is one of our favorite seasonings. I love making my own seasoning, that way I can adjust as we prefer. A homemade Cajun seasoning recipe that can be made in less than 5 minutes is key to some really great Creole cooking.

If you've tried of Slap ya Mama, or more recently Stalekracker (the social media Tiktok star who has his own seasoning now in Walmart) then you're familiar with this seasoning.

The Cajuns are famous for dancing the 'two step' to old time Cajun music, maybe that's where the name comes from. I can't definitively say, and I have researched it.

It's a rustic Seasoning blend with a great flavor profile. It's amazing and it works magic on pretty much anything. In southern Louisiana it's the perfect blend.

❤️ Why you'll love it

  • The ingredients are not too crazy. Typical stuff you should probably have in your spice drawer - common ingredients.
  • Making your own spice blends at home means you can tweak it to your own preference. More heat, add Cayenne. More salt needed, there you go.
  • Making your own spice blend always saves money.
  • The whole family will enjoy this seasoning. We use it in all our family recipes.
  • You'll love telling people you make your own Cajun seasoning.
  • Great in dishes like: red beans, blackened seasoning, Jambalaya and Gumbo.

🧅 Ingredients

Cajun Two Step Seasoning Recipe (3)
  • Smoked Paprika (red pepper)
  • Onion Powder
  • Garlic Powder
  • Dried Thyme
  • Dried Oregano
  • White Pepper
  • Cayenne
  • Salt
  • Black Pepper

See the full recipe at the bottom of this post for quantities.

🥣 Instructions

  • Step 1: Add all the spices to an 8oz mason jar, or a resealable bag (or some other container you prefer) and give a good shake around to mix the spices well.
  • Step 2: Store sealed tightly.

Hint: Add some to a salt shaker and offer on the dinner table. This Cajun two-step seasoning is really good used in place of salt. Season fries, dips, steak, chicken... pretty much anything.

🔄 Substitutions and Variations

  • Lemon Pepper - Add a little lemon pepper and you'll have a seasoning much like Old Bay.
  • Chili powder - add a tablespoon of chili powder for a more tex-mex blend.

No serious equipment needed. I like to store my homemade spices in a small mason jar. Other than that, you'll need measuring spoons to measure out the spices.

🧊 Storage

Store at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 1 month, for freshness, to keep the quality of the ingredients.

💡 Tips

Expert Tip: The amount of cayenne pepper you use will determine the spicy heat in your seasoning blend. 2 teaspoons (like I have) will give a little heat. More is obviously going to make it hotter, and same in reverse for having less heat.

👩‍🍳 FAQs

What is in typical Cajun seasoning?

Well. This could be a serious rabbit hole. So I'll try to keep it short.
Your typical fresh seasoning blend of bell pepper, celery and onion (the holy trinity) would be a part of your Cajun cooking process. Throw in some green onions here, some garlic there. You will always need a seasoning blend of sorts though, to compliment those ingredients and that's where this recipe can be a good substitute sometimes, if needs be.
Typical Cajun seasoning would have a simple blend of paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne, salt.... the rest is 'lagniappe' (extra).

What's the difference between Cajun Seasoning and Creole Seasoning?

Cajun seasonings tend to have a bold flavor of more ground peppers in the ingredients where Creole tends to have more herbs. If you think of Creole recipes and how there is always more tomato (which would need the herbs) - whereas Cajun recipes do not.

Can I use this variety of spices in authentic Cajun recipes?

Absolutely! Any Cajun recipes will most likely call for Creole Seasoning or Cajun seasoning, so there you go!
